2 or 3 Day Tara Adventure

Starting from the iconic Djurdjevica Bridge, our 2-day river adventure descends through 50km of breathtaking scenery and thrilling rapids down the Tara River to our base camp at Brastanovica.

Our tour begins with a scenic drive through the spectacular Durmitor National Park to our put in 3km up from the famous Tara Bridge. After learning a little history about the area in which we’ll be spending the next two days, and a safety briefing, we set out on the first leg of our adventure. We quickly encounter the Ljutica river tributary, a torrent of rushing whitewater which holds the record for being the shortest river and most powerful spring in Europe. As we pass under the Tara bridge, we get a moment to regroup as we approach the first of many exhilarating Class II rapids that will feature in our day’s 23km descent. Gliding over crystal clear water, today we will paddle through the deepest point of the canyon at 1300 meters, and the narrowest point at Laza's Stone.  With the rim of the canyon towering above us, we drift deeper into rich plant and animal habitats until we arrive at the secluded Radovan Luka. With both camping and hotel options, we will enjoy a night under the stars by the river with traditional Balkan food and music.

Our second day in the canyon begins with a warm up and drills to prepare us for another safe day on the river. After 9km of paddling and a class III rapid (depending on water level) we arrive at a majestic waterfall with the option to take a short hike up to a hidden cave. We continue our journey until one of the many sandy beaches along the bank looks warm enough for a swim and lunch. With just a few hours left in the peace and solitude of the canyon, we’ll take the time to practice manoeuvres and play on the final stretch of rapids before arriving back at camp. After a cool down and debrief, our evening will be spent enjoying another traditional homemade meal by the fire as we reflect on our canyon adventure, or prepare for optional day 3.

Optional day 3 descends the final stretch of the Tara River to its confluence with the Piva. This is the most challenging section of the river with 21 class II to IV rapids over 18km and should only to be attempted by experience paddlers or those who have demonstrated their skills on the first 2 days of the tour.  This is also the most popular section of the river for white water rafting tours. For those that want to experience this final leg but aren’t ready to tackle it on the SUP, there is the option to join a raft. Our epic adventure ends at Scepan Polje, where the Tara becomes the Drina and flows on without us into Bosnia.
